Architectural Photography: Project Planning

Narrative photography is a process starting before the shooting day and continuing all the way through to the delivery of the final images.  I'll either request a walk through with the client or ask them to submit pre-shots to help me get an idea of the space and learn about the design features the architect or designer found to be the most inspiring.

The pre-shots also reveal the angles the architect find to be the most interesting.  Architects pre-visualize the aesthetic characteristics of a project during its conception right through to the drawings stage.  During and after construction, they frequently check their favorite views confirm their original vision.  I don't just copy the pre-shots the architects provides, I interpret them with the goal of creating an outside the box final image.

A drawing marked up with the client's preferred views also is helpful.  From the client's drawing I can create a shot plan based on multiple factors including staging, time of day, and angle of the sun.
