"Come. Come into the sea of forever. Let my tranquil tide carry you home to yourself."
America's Land of Tranquility Visions of the Secret Beauty of North Dakota, Images by Steve Silverman, Text by Robin L. Silverman, Creativisions Press, ©2003, 2nd Printing 2004. Hardcover list price $40.
"Surprises await. Even rocks can bloom."
North Dakota's secret beauty first became legend when Lewis and Clark described the state's natural abundance in their journals. Pioneers marveled at the rich soil of its "vastlands," and President Teddy Roosevelt enjoyed the rugged extravagance of its Badlands. His North Dakota experience later inspired him to create the National Park System.
"Savor the twilight: a sweet, sumptuous dessert after a satisfying day."
Although North Dakota is known for those who have triumphed over its wide open spaces, few have celebrated its gentle, tender spots. Photographer Steve Silverman decided to do both. In a journey that took him ten years, Silverman explored North Dakota's unbounded radiance in places both great and small.
"Today is the day to show your true colors...to turn your back on storms of doubt..."
Steve's wife Robin, an inspirational author, joined him on the land. She found that it had a voice of its own that was both stern and soothing. In "the sea of forever," she discovered that stress seemed to disappear, replaced by a comforting, sure stillness.
"No vessel is needed. Your spirit will carry you across."
"America's Land of Tranquility" is a treat for the eye and sustenance for the spirit. It can be enjoyed as a metaphoric three-part journey into your own heart, or simply as a celebration of what Steve Silverman calls, "America's Freedom Frontier."
"The current of life inside you flows..."
Since its publication in 2003, America's Land of Tranquility has been purchased and enjoyed by people from almost every state and over 40 foreign countries. It has been presented by North Dakota officials to dignitaries, government representatives, and heads of state of several nations. Many transplanted North Dakotans from all over the World have remarked about how proud they are to show off their native home to friends and acquaintances. North Dakotans visiting other countries have used the book as gifts to people who have hosted them.
"To rejoice in bounty..."
According to Steve Silverman, what North Dakotans have in abundance and take for granted, many others are seeking and find scarce. North Dakota boasts some of the most unspoiled land in the USA. "The rest of the world is getting paved over," Silverman says. "Here, you can walk literally miles without seeing another human being. I spent two days shooting pictures at Shark's Tooth Bay. In that time, only two boats crossed the horizon in front of me."
"Even our crops our beautiful," Silverman says. "On my picture taking journey, I ran into some folks from Maryland who flew out to North Dakota in August just so they could see the 'amber waves of grain.'" Other places grow sunflowers as a novelty. Here, you can see acres and acres of brilliant sunflowers because North Dakota is the nation's number one sunflower state. But, don't overlook the flourescent yellow of Canola, the blue seas of Flax, not to mention the over 1200 varieties of wildflowers that grow here.
"Let their deep blue calm fill your soul and the radiant flame inside you glow..."
Perhaps the most beautiful feature of North Dakota is the sky. It's a challenge to frame as something special. After all, sky is everywhere. But, here it really is special. One of Steve Silverman's colleagues once told him that it was impossible to shoot great sky pictures where he lived because there was always something in the way like buildings and power lines. North Dakota has an almost infinite number of unencumbered views of the sky. With the cleanest air in the USA and some of the cleanest air in the World, North Dakota often boasts bright blue saturated skies. A fortunate location along the jet stream creates magnificent and spectacular cloud formations. Finally, nature gives us the color at the end of the day when it throws prairie dust up in the air to create magnificent color drenched sunsets.
