Frequently, I am asked what makes my portraits stand out from the "average" stuff out there...anywhere from the portrait studios located in big box retailers to someone with "a digital camera." In addition to the posing techniques and the ways I get expression from my clients, adding value with effects adds value to what I deliver. Here is a case study of what I do for my clients. First off...retouching. I use a sophisticated Photoshop PlugIn called Perfect Portrait 1 produced by OnOne Software. This software enables me to realistically smooth skin texture, lighten shadows and damaged skin under the eyes, remove blemishes, whiten teeth, and add color to lips. Compare the original image on the left with the retouched image on the right. Even though this subject had good skin and few blemishes, we were able to improve the overall impression. Hair fly aways were also eliminated or reduced.
Taking the project one step further, addressing the background. Although a neutral white background is nice, perhaps we can go a bit further. From an extensive custom produced archive of backgrounds, I chose this one. The subject's image was first outlined or extracted from the background using another OnOne product, Perfect Mask. This sophisticated software accurately removes her from the background, even addressing small wisps of hair. She was then placed, off axis, on the background I chose in a realistic fashion so she looked like was in the particular room when the photo was taken.
